What is tankage? Tankage is a by-product of slaughterhouses, which contains such refuse as lungs, intestines, bones, etc. These are processed, dried, and ground to produce a material sued in stock feeds and for fertilizer.
What is the value of tankage? It contains about 4 to 10% nitrogen and 7 to 14% phosphoric acid. It is lacking potash content.
How is tankage applied? About 4 lbs. per 100 sq. ft.; usually as a top- or side-dressing to growing plants, hoed or cultivated into the soil. It is often employed in place of nitrate of soda, which is quicker acting. It must be kept perfectly dry in storage, or it will decay quickly.
