Nitrate of Soda

For what purpose is nitrate of soda used? Nitrate of soda furnishes a readily available source of nitrogen. Nitrogen stimulates the vegetative growth of the plant and is also essential for the reproductive phases. If used in large amounts, it can cause greasy or pasty soils that are hard to work with.

What can we use in place of nitrate of soda? Ammonium sulfate, ammo-phos, cottonseed, soybean meal, or tankage.
