Pavement Planting

How are plants grown between the flagstones in a pavement? For the plants to succeed, the stones should be laid on sand overlying several inches of soil. Watering during hot, dry weather is very helpful.

How are plants planted between flagstones? Planting is first done as the flat stones are laid. When the spot for a plant is selected, the plant is set so that when the surface is leveled for the next flagstone, the top of the plant is resting at the correct level. The stone may have to be chipped to avoid crushing the plant.

Which plants are suitable for planting in a flagged walk? Those that will withstand much walking are: Festuca ovina glauca, Sagina subulata, And Tunica saxifraga. Others to use are Thymus serpyllum varieties, Alyssum montanum, Erinalpinus, Veronica repens, and Lysimachia nummularia.
